Cards Welcome 2010 Recruiting Class!

With the recruiting season winding down, the Cardinal football team currently has commitments from 33 excellent high school players. While the class will continue to grow through the next few months, the Cards believe they have the foundation in place for what looks to be an excellent recruiting year.

The class of 2014 will look to contribute to the North Central football team's "Drive for Five" consecutive CCIW titles this Fall. The committed players are:

Coach Thorne and the rest of the football staff would like to thank the recruits, the Cardinal players and the faculty of North Central for their contributions to another successful recruiting season. The Cardinals are currently in Spring Ball which runs Tuesday-Thursday, from 4-6 PM and is open to the public at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

After nearly a three month hiatus, I am glad to say that the Cardinal football blog is back and running. Throughout the time off the Cardinal football team has been hard at work in both the weight room and class room, looking to do all that they can to improve for the 2010 football season. With recruiting in full swing, the prospects for the 2014 class of North Central College are shaping out to be a great group of players. Early next week their will be an up to date report of the recruiting season. Some great things have happened already this off season;

-Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe, senior defensive tackle Tim Janecek, Coach Brad Spencer and Coach Rick Ponx all participated in the 2009 Tazon de Estrellas Bowl in Mexico this past December. Fanthorpe also participated in the North-South Division III All-Star game in Salem, Virginia.

-In the classroom 63 Cardinal football players posted 3.0 GPA or higher. This was the highest in the history of the program.

-Cardinal football players have seen tremendous gains in the weight room, due in large part to newly appointed Strength and Conditioning coach Tony Pape. Pape was a four year starter on the offensive line at the University of Michigan. He was drafted in the 7th round in 2004 by the Miami Dolphins and also spent some time with the San Diego Chargers and the Berlin Thunder and Amsterdam Admirals of the NFL Europe league.

-Assistant Head Coach Rick Ponx was promoted to Defensive Coordinator at the conclusion of the 2009 season. Ponx spent three years at his previous school (Ohio Northern University) in the same position.

-North Central College opened its beautiful new Res/Rec Fieldhouse in January. The field house provides the Cardinal Football team with an indoor practice facility.

These, among other things, kick off a great start to the 2010 off season. Next week the 2010 Cardinal Football Spring Practice schedule will be posted. All in all, things are going well in the world of Cardinal football!

Season Recap

With their victory over Elmhurst College by the score of 49-24, the North Central football team concluded its 2009 campaign on November 14th. With the victory, the Cardinals took home a share of the CCIW crown as co-champions with Illinois Wesleyan University. This CCIW title gave the Cardinals their forth consecutive title, something that has only been achieved twice before in the history of the CCIW. Despite being ranked in the top 20 in two final season polls, the Cardinals were left out of playoff contention by the NCAA.

The season itself was marked by a number of outstanding individual performances by a number of Cardinals. Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe led the Cardinal offense with his outstanding play for the third year straight. Due to his and the rest of the offenses efforts, North Central was the highest scoring college football team in America this past season with an average of 49 points per game. During his career, Fanthorpe managed to climb high in the North Central record books in every passing category and finished with the highest career completion percentage in school history (60%). Last week, Aaron was named the Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year in the CCIW. This is his third time winning the award and he stands as the only player in the 63 year history of the conference to do so. In all, twelve Cardinals received All-CCIW honors. These players are:

The Cardinals' nine First Team selections were the most in the conference this season and the largest haul in the history of the North Central program, topping the 2007 squad's eight First Team honorees. Congratulations to all of these players and to the entire team for their hard work and success this past season.

The team would also like to thank all of the fans, staff and faculty of North Central College for their continued support throughout the season. It was always comforting to know that whether the Cardinals played at home or on the road, the fans provided a great atmosphere that felt like a home field advantage. Please continue your support for the team as it looks to improve during the off season and the 2010 season.

Schneiderbauer Honored

North Central linebacker Joe Schneiderbauer was honored as a CCIW Defensive Player of the Week for his performance this past Saturday as the Cardinals defeated Augustana College 45-26. The junior from Sterling, Illinois recorded 11 total tackles with three of those tackles coming for a loss. Schneiderbauer is the first North Central Cardinal football player to win the defensvie player of the week honor for the CCIW this season. Congratulations to Joe!

Cardinals Bounce Back

After a disappointing loss at Illinois Wesleyan, the North Central Cardinals responded with a 45-26 victory over Augustana College this past Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois. Trailing 6-0 after the first quarter, the Cards ripped off twenty four points in the second quarter to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room for halftime. The Cardinals would never relinquish that lead as they would score another twenty one points in the second half of the game.

Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe turned out his best passing performance of the season completing 19-24 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, which included a forty six yard touchdown strike to receiver Steve Hlavac right before the halftime horn sounded.

On the ground the Cardinals were again led with an impressive performance from senior running back Butch Rossberg who earned every one of his 113 yards. On the day Rossberg averaged just over seven yards a carry and found the end zone on a fourteen yard scamper in the second quarter.

Leading the Cardinals aerial assault was Hlavac, who gave the Vikings secondary nightmares all afternoon. The junior wide receiver finished the day with seven catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Cardinals were led by junior linebacker Joe Schneiderbauer who posted eleven tackles, three of which were for a loss of yards. Sophomore defensive back Josh McLeod provided a key interception for the Cardinals in the second quarter that helped jump start the Cardinal offense.

The victory puts the Cardinals at 7-2 for the 2009 season. Ranked 16th in the nation by the latest D3Football.com poll, the Cardinals will look to finish the regular season 8-2 when the Elmhurst College Bluejays roll into town this Saturday. This last home game of the regular season and senior appreciation day is set for a 1 PM start. On Saturday the Cardinals will attempt to capture their forth consecutive CCIW Conference Championship.

JV Cardinals End Season on a High Note

The North Central JV football team completed their season on Sunday with a 35-14 victory over St. Ambrose University (IA). With the victory, the JV team ended their season with a 6-2 record, with both losses coming by only three points. Congratulations to the JV football team for compiling the best JV record in North Central College history.

Fanthorpe and Wild Honored

Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe and junior punter Shaun Wild were both honored by the CCIW as players of the week for their performances against the Wheaton Thunder this past Saturday. Fanthorpe went 16-28 for 218 yards passing and four passing touchdowns. He also led the Cardinals in rushing with 88 yards. This is Fanthorpe's third offensive player of the week honor.

Wild punted six times for a 36.7 yard average and landed two punts inside the Wheaton twenty yard-line to give the Cardinal defense excellent field position all afternoon. This is his first player of the week award this season.

The Cardinals are currently preparing to face the Illinois Wesleyan Titans this Saturday.

Thunder Silenced!

The Cardinals took sole possession of first place in the CCIW with their 27-7 victory over 3rd ranked Wheaton College on Saturday. In the annual "Battle for the Little Brass Bell" North Central ripped off twenty unanswered points in the second half to break the 7-7 tie at halftime. While the offense managed to produce 484 yards, it was the defense that turned out their best effort of the season, holding the potent Thunder offense to only seven points and 206 yards.

Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe connected on 16 of his 28 passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns. Fanthorpe also led the Cardinals in rushing with 88 yards on twelve carries that included a 34 yard scamper down the sideline that led to the final Cardinal score which all but sealed the victory.

Junior Steve Hlavac led the Cardinals in receiving for the second straight week with seven grabs for 67 yards and one touchdown. Junior tight end Kyle Fiedorowicz also chipped in with three catches for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Nick Hicks served as a triple threat and kept the Thunder on their heels all afternoon. Hicks finished the day with 69 yards rushing, 58 yards receiving and 20 yards passing. He found the endzone on a fifteen yard catch late in the 3rd quarter.

In the absence of All-CCIW runningback Dominic Sulo, senior Pat Malek served as the teams primary back and contributed 66 yards on eleven carries and had one catch for twenty yards.

Defensively, the Cardinals were led by sophomore safety Josh McLeod, who totaled nine tackles and three pass breakups. Sophomore Willie Hayes continued his stellar play and totaled eight stops, which included a punishing hit in the backfield on 4th and goal, halting the Thunder's opportunity to score. As a unit, the defense totaled six sacks of the Thunder quarterback and picked him off twice.

With the victory Saturday, the Cardinals climbed into the top ten in the national rankings. D3Football.com ranked the Cardinals 9th, their highest since falling from 3rd after the Ohio Northern loss. This Saturday, the Cardinals will travel to Bloomington, Illinois to take on the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University. The Titans boast one of the top defenses in the nation and are currently 6-1. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.

Player Perspectives: Tim Janecek

This edition of player perspectives features 2008 All-CCIW selection Tim Janecek. Janecek is a three year starter on the defensive line and provided a pivotal interception in the 2008 "Little Brass Bell Game" against Wheaton College. In his piece, Janecek discusses what the rivalry with Wheaton College means to him and the rest of the Cardinal football team. Janecek is a 2006 graduate of Argo High School and hails from Bridgeview, Illinois.

My freshman year, I knew that the Wheaton game was a big game only because of Coach Thorne’s speech in the beginning of camp. I really underestimated how much this game means to the program. Going into the week there was a buzz around the locker room and around campus. All of the upper class men just really had this different attitude. Until that point I had never seen a team or group of individuals that focused at one time. During our first meeting of the week, Coach Wienke sent a fiery message to the defense that just got everyone in the room fired up, and this was on Monday. Every player on the team was ready to play the game right then and there.

The whole week of practice leading up to the game is fun, whether it is the scout team or the starters, everyone is giving everything they have. Still, you won’t know how much fun the game really is until the first kickoff. From the first whistle until the final horn, every player that takes the field gives it their all and flies around. The best part about the game is the rivalry between the towns. The winner has the bragging rights for the rest of the year. The towns are so close and it’s awesome to see the crowds come out and get just as fired up as the players are for the game. The game means a lot to me because it always comes down to every player, playing all four quarters giving everything they have, and laying it all on the line to get the victory. There is so much preparation and time put in before the game from watching film lifting and going to practice. When that Saturday gets there, you just cant wait to take the field, and there is nothing more exciting than knowing it is going to be a battle for all four quarters. As an individual, you are going to have to put forth your absolute best effort so the team wins the game.

My first two years here the game was a blast, but the outcome wasn’t in our favor. My junior year it was awesome to see everyone on the offense and the defense on the same page and firing on all cylinders. It was the coolest game that I have ever played in. We won that game and witnessing how every fan and player was so excited was an amazing experience. This year is hopefully going to produce the same result, with the Cardinals coming out on top.

Cardinals Survive Shootout!

North Central had just enough fire power to defeat the Carthage Red Men 63-49 this past Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In a game that totaled 1152 yards of offense, the Cardinals biggest play of the night came on defense, when junior defensive back Kyle Haste returned an interception 80 yards to secure the victory late in the fourth quarter.

Despite facing a fierce pass rush, senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe produced another impressive performance going 20-37 for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Steve Hlavac had nine grabs for 117 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cardinals in receiving, while senior Hank Johnston provided some late game heroics with two fourth quarter touchdown receptions. The Cardinal offense line, anchored by senior tackles Zach Baldacci and Josh Delancy, paved the way for the ground game, which totaled 337 yards on fifty attempts. Fanthorpe was also well protected and sacked but once on the night.

The runningback trio of Butch Rossberg (SR), Pat Malek (SR) and Nick Kukuc (FR) gave the Red Men defense nightmares, as they broke tackle after tackle throughout the night. Malek led the Cards with 120 yards on sixteen carries, while Rossberg also topped the one hundred yard mark with 113 yards on seventeen carries. Kukuc totaled 54 yards on seven carries and proved to be a weapon on special teams as well, totaling 178 yards on five kickoff returns, while providing the offense with excellent field position all night. He also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.

The Cardinal defense made plays when it counted and caused seven turnovers (4 ints, 3 fumbles). Aside from Hastes' pick six, defensive backs Scott Hogan (SR), Scott Skuteris (SO) and Josh McLeod (SO) all intercepted the Red Men quarterback, who threw the ball eighty four times on the night. Hogan also led the Cardinals in tackles with eight, while McLeod blocked a punt. Sophomore linebacker Willie Hayes contributed to the defensive effort with five tackles and a sack.

Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals JV squad defeated the Aurora University Spartans 35-6. With the weekend victories, both North Central teams improved their season record to 5-1.

Riding their five game winning streak, the Cardinals look to face their toughest opponent of the season this Saturday, when the Wheaton Thunder rumble into Naperville. The Cardinals defeated the Thunder last year 44-21 in the annual "Battle for the Little Brass Bell". This rivalry game dates back to 1946 and will also serve as the Cardinals 2009 Homecoming game. The Thunder are currently ranked 4th in the country in the D3Football.com Top 25 Poll, while the Cardinals moved up to 13th with their victory this past Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 PM.

Cardinals move to to 4-1

The Cardinals clicked on all cylinders this past Saturday with an 83-7 victory over the Vikings of North Park University. The offense exploded right out of the gate scoring thirty four points in the first quarter on only ten plays. Defensively, the Cardinals suffocated the Viking offense all night allowing only seven points and 152 yards.

Quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe put on a passing clinic going a perfect 12-12 for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Fanthorpe had all night to throw as the Cardinal offensive line, led by senior tackle Josh Delancy, kept the North Park pressure to a minimum. Leading the Cardinals in receiving was junior Steve Hlavac who totaled three grabs for sixty three yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, the offense took the running back by committee approach and pounded out 401 yards and eight touchdowns, with six different players finding the end zone. Senior running back Dominic Sulo rushed for eighty eight yards on fourteen carries and led the team with three touchdowns. Freshman Nick Kukuc led the Cards in rushing yardage with 104.

Defensively, the Cardinals were led by sophomore linebacker Jim Bardusk, who totaled six tackles and a sack. Linebacker Willie Hayes scored his second defensive touchdown of the season on a forty yard fumble recovery that put the Cards up by two scores early in the first quarter. On the night, North Park was only able to manage forty nine yards rushing on thirty three attempts.

On special teams, the Cardinals played fast and physical, giving both the offense and defense great field position all night. Sophomore kicker Morgan Sheridan was perfect kicking for the Cards and broke a school record with eleven extra points made throughout the game.

Sunday afternoon, the JV Cardinals squeaked by Elmhurst College 19-18 and completed the season sweep of the Blue Jays. This weekend’s victories brought both squads to 4-1 on the season.

This Saturday, the Cardinals look to remain perfect in CCIW play when they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin to face the Carthage College Red Men. The Red Men are also 4-1 on the season and posted a 45-38 victory over Elmhurst this past Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 PM.

Former Cardinal wide receiver Joe Mastrino (2008) is a finalist to host an online show entitled "The Big Trip". The show consists of a number of video blog entries which would find Joe traveling all around the United States and documenting his adventures. Anyone who knows Joe would agree that he would be a perfect candidate for this opportunity!

Part of the application process required Joe to make an online video describing why he thinks he should be the host for "The Big Trip". Fanthorpe Honored

Senior Quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe received his second CCIW Offensive Player of the Week honor for his performance this weekend against the Millikin Big Blue. In the game, Aaron completed 12-19 passes for 229 yards and set a school record with six touchdown passes in a single game. Previously, Fanthorpe earned co-player of the week honors for his performance against Benedictine University, where he was 12-19 for 245 yards and 2 touchdowns. Congrats to Aaron!

On a Roll!

The North Central College football team continued their recent dominance this past weekend with a 58-0 pounding of Millikin University. With a 42-0 lead at halftime and the defense allowing just 190 yards of offense, the Cardinals outplayed the Big Blue in every facet of the game for a complete team victory. Quick scoring and field position played key roles throughout the game as the Cardinals were able to score 42 points in only seven minutes and forty one seconds of possession in the first half. The defense and special teams provided the Cardinal offense with short field for most of the game.

Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe turned out another impressive performance completing 12-19 tosses for 229 yards and six touchdowns. His six touchdown passes broke a school record for touchdown passes in a single game. The recipients of those passes were senior wide receiver Hank Johnston with two, junior tight end Jeff Grunwald with two, junior wide receiver Steve Hlavac and sophomore wide receiver Joe Antonacci.

On the ground the Cards had another solid outing, rushing for 191 yards on 35 carries. Freshman running back Nick Kukuc led the Cardinals with 69 yards on three carries, which included a 56 yard touchdown scamper.

Defensively, the Cardinals gave up only 190 yards of total offense on their way to a shutout of the Big Blue. Recently converted linebacker Joe Schneiderbauer led the Cardinals with eleven tackles. Junior defensive lineman Robert Champion pressured the Millikin quarterback all day and finished the game with 2.5 sacks. Sophomore linebacker Willie Hayes had an interception and a fumble return for a touchdown.

On Sunday, the Cardinals JV team completed the season sweep of Carthage with a 28-6 victory over the Red Men. This weekend, the Cardinals outscored their opponents 86-6 over two contests. With the victories, both squads improved their season records to 3-1. The team remains ranked 14th in the country in the D3Football.com Top 25 poll.

This Saturday, the Cardinals continue CCIW play and host the North Park University Vikings. Kickoff is set for 6 PM.

Player Perspectives: Zach Baldacci

This edition of player perspectives features senior captain Zach Baldacci. Zach has started at left tackle the last two years for the Cardinals and made the switch from the defensive to the offensive line prior to his junior season. In his piece, Zach discusses the season thus far, how the Cardinals prepared for Millikin this weekend and what he and the team hopes to achieve the rest of the season. Zach, a native of Tinley Park, is a 2006 graduate of Andrew High School.

The season didn’t start exactly perfect for us. We lost our opening game of the season to a good Ohio Northern team that we felt like we should have beat. That was definitely a tough loss to swallow, but, it doesn’t mean we can’t achieve the goals we have set as a team for this season. I think as a team we learned our lessons from that game and have been better since. We gained back confidence the next two games with wins over Benedictine University and Olivet College. It was nice to get these wins at home for our fans. This upcoming weekend we start our conference play with Millikin University and we are all looking forward to this part of the season. This is what the team has worked so hard for on a daily basis through the whole off-season. Millikin will definitely be a great challenge for us as our first conference opponent. They are a tough team that plays hard. It is a game that we like because a physical game is our style of play and it will take a total team effort to get the victory. This week of preparation for Millikin went very well. Both sides of the football have put a lot of time in the film room to look at the strengths and weaknesses of this team and have transferred the knowledge to the field. I also think our scout team guys have been doing an awesome job simulating Millikin’s offense and defense all week. We had three good practices this week and are very much ready to start our CCIW conference schedule.

Our most important goal right now is to win the CCIW for the fourth year in a row. The CCIW is a very strong conference and it will not be an easy task for us. Most of our road games in the conference this year will be long distance. We will see how the team handles the heavy traveling. I don’t think it will be much of a problem as we play pretty well on the road. Another important factor is for us to stay healthy. We have absorbed some pretty big blows on the defensive side of the ball with Matt Wenger and Derek Sulo being out. I feel confident in the younger guys stepping up and believe we won’t have a problem playing at a high level for the rest of the year.

Spencer to Coach All-Star Team

Cardinal receivers coach Brad Spencer was picked to be one of eight coaches for a Division III All-Star game in Mexico this December. The 2009 Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) will take place on Dec. 19 in Monterrey, Mexico and is sponsored by Global Football.

Spencer will assist coaching Team Stars and Stripes, which will consist of over 50 of the top Division III football players in America. The Stars in Stripes will take on Tec de Monterrey University at the Tec Monterrey Campus Estado de Mexico. Tec Monterrey is the premier private university system in Mexico, with campuses in numerous locations around the country. Tec teams have captured eight of the past ten Liga Major football national championships.

This will be Brad Spencers forth time coaching a football team outside of the United States. Previously, Spencer has coached the North Central Cardinals against European competition on three separate occasions. In 2006 the team traveled to Italy and faced the Trieste Mustangs. In 2008 Spencer served as the Head Coach for the Midwest All-Stars. This team, which traveled to Ireland and took on the Dublin Rebels, consisted primarily of North Central College alumni. Finally, this past summer, Spencer and the Cardinals again traveled to Europe and faced the Landquart Broncos out of Switzerland. With a perfect 3-0 record against foreign competition, the Cardinal football program wishes Brad Spencer the best of luck in Mexico.

Offensive Explosion!

This past weekend found the Cardinals on the winning end of two games once again, each with explosive offense and sturdy defense.

On Saturday North Central played host to Olivet College (Michigan) and amassed over 600 yards of offense for a total of 69 points. Senior running back Dominic Sulo eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the third straight game rushing for 127 yards, and found the end zone three times, giving him a total of nine touchdowns in three games. Senior backs Pat Malek and Butch Rossberg also contributed greatly to the ground effort with Malek earning 96 yards and Rossberg gaining 52 yards. Both backs found the end zone, with Malek scoring on a 65 yard scamper. In all, the Cards carried the ball 44 times for 342 yards and seven scores.

In the passing game, senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe had another precise performance completing fourteen of sixteen throws for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Junior tight end Jeff Grunwald caught both scores.

Defensively, the Cards were led by sophomore linebacker Willie Hayes for the second straight week with seven tackles. Freshman linebacker Joey Michals contributed six tackles. In all, the defense allowed only 234 yards on 60 plays and surrendered a mere 18 points.

On Sunday, the JV Cardinals traveled to Carthage College (Wisconsin) and defeated the Red Men 34-13. This gave the Cardinals a total of 103 points for the second consecutive week, while both defenses gave up a combined 31 points.

This Saturday the Cardinals will travel to Decatur to face a tough Millikin University team who is 3-0 on the season. This will open the Cardinals 2009 CCIW schedule.

Season Update

After a disappointing loss to Ohio Northern on September 5th, the Cards looked to get their season back on track with a win against the Eagles of Benedictine University this past Saturday. The Cardinals dominated the game in all phases and posted a 55-0 shutout to bring their season record to 1-1. Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe dissected the Eagles secondary with a 15 for 19 passing performance that resulted in 245 yards and two touchdowns.

The ground game churned out an impressive 304 yards at eight yards a carry. Two senior running backs, Dom Sulo and Butch Rossberg, eclipsed the 100 yard mark with Sulo gaining 104 yards and Rossberg gaining 137. Sulo found the end zone three times and Rossberg once on a ninety six yard scamper which set a North Central College record as the longest play from scrimmage in school history.

In the absence of All-American Matt Wenger, the defense was led by sophomore linebacker Willie Hayes who posted nine tackles, two of which were for a loss of yards.

An equally impressive outing came this Sunday afternoon with the Cardinal Freshman/JV team notching a 48-26 victory over Elmhurst College. In all, the Cardinals managed 103 points on offense this weekend, while the defense surrendered only twenty six.

For his efforts Saturday, quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe earned CCIW co-offensive player of the week honors. The Cardinals climbed their way back to 12th in the D3football.com rankings this week after dropping from 4th to 15th due to the loss in Ohio. With a bye this weekend, the Cardinals look to use the extra practice time to prepare themselves for Olivet College (Michigan) on September 26th and the start of their CCIW schedule.

Kickoff Around the Corner!

With the completion of their 2009 camp earlier this week, the North Central College football team finally gets their regular season underway this Saturday against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears. The kickoff is set for 1:30pm (EST) in Ada, Ohio.

With a strong turnout this fall, the Cards look to open their season while maintaining a roster of over 130 players. The 2009 camp saw the Cards remain healthy on all fronts and ready to compete during their long season. With the team 100% the Cardinals are focused on having a strong showing throughout the course of their season in both non-conference and CCIW play.

This years camp was highlighted by a number of activities over the course of two long and grueling weeks. Among these was yet another team organized trip to Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, where the Cards packed enough food to feed over a hundred hungry children for a year. Camp culiminated in a scrimmage against Harper Junior College where the team looked strong in all facets of the game.

The team and coaching staff extends its sincere gratitude to all the faculty and staff of North Central College who helped to make this years camp a success. We would not have success on the field if it wasn't for the wonderful support that the college provides.

With the season only two days away, the Cardinals look to make North Central College and the city of Naperville proud of their efforts on and off the field.

The Cardinals opened their 2009 camp Saturday in Naperville with just under 140 players on the roster. Over the next two weeks, the team looks to rigorously prepare for their 2009 campaign and their season opener against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University on Saturday September 5th. Coming off of last years undefeated regular season, North Central looks to continue their success in the CCIW and in the national playoffs.

Another Preseason Honor!

Yesterday D3Football.com released their 2009 Preseason rankings. The list found the Cardinals ranked 4th in the nation behind only National Champion Mount Union College, national runner-up Wisconsin Whitewater University and perennial powerhouse Mary Hardin-Baylor. This is the third separate publication that has ranked the Cardinals in the top ten nationally for the upcoming season.

Cardinals Honored

Four Cardinals were honored earlier this week as D3football.com announced thier annual Preseason All-American teams. Senior quarterback Aaron Fanthorpe was named a first team selection on offense and senior linebacker Matt Wenger was named a first team defense selection. Both Fanthorpe and Wenger were honored as CCIW players of the year for their efforts during the 2008 season. It was Fanthorpe's second consecutive year winning the award.

Senior defensive back Derek Sulo was picked as a second team defensive selection and junior offensive lineman Kyle Antos was also named to the second team on offense. Both Sulo and Antos notched places on the All-CCIW team last fall with Sulo earning a first team defense selection and Antos a second team selection on offense.

The Cardinals report to training camp on August 15th and open their 2009 season in Ada, Ohio against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears on September 5th.

Switzerland Recap

Now that we have been back (to reality) from Switzerland for almost a month, it has given us all time to look back upon our great trip. For me, it is the completion of an almost two year planning process, from the initial meetings with Leo and Patrick at Global Football, to being in Switzerland watching our players being catapulted from boats into a ragging river with class IV rapids!

There were a number of highlights on the trip, including: the first day "man's" hike up the Junfrau mountain range, Nick Hicks floating down the river while "rafting," the day excursions across Switzerland, all the way to the many memorable moments during the game including listening to our countries national anthem being played pregame.

But to me, the memories that last the longest are the friendships that formed and strengthened throughout our team, coaching staff, support staff, and family members....that is what these trips are all about! And if we can spread the American culture and one great piece of it (football!) to a small piece of the world then I will always view our trips as a great success.

Thank you to all those who made this trip happen, we can't wait to travel in three years!

Switzerland Day Five: Lucerne

The fifth day of their trip found the Cardinals touring the city of Lucerne.

After exploring the city for a few hours, the team was taken across Lake Lucerne on a boat and brought to the base of Mt. Pilatus, a renowned tourist attraction and one of the highest peaks in the alps.

After ascending to the top by way of train, we were greeted with one of the most beautiful views one could possibly imagine.

The descent down the mountain came by the way of cable car, offering even more sights for the Cards to capture while heading down into the valley.

With a few days remaining, the Cards look to enjoy the rest of their time in Switzerland by canyoning as well as other outdoor activities.

Switzerland Day Four: Bern

Day four of their trip found the Cardinals venturing into the Swiss capital of Bern.

The name Bern is German for bear, and the city itself, until recently, featured many bears in pits along the river.

The river Aare runs through the center of the city and contains water from melted glaciers that rest up in the alps.

The city provided a nice relaxing afternoon for the Cards fresh off of their victory.

Switzerland Day Three: Game Day, Cards Victorious in Europe!

After a full nights rest on Thursday, the Cardinals departed their hotel in Interlaken on Friday morning for the town of Chur. Overall the ride took about three hours and took us through numerous winding mountain trails and tunnels. The city of Chur consisted of two parts, a modern industrial half and a medieval, historic half.

Upon arriving in Chur we were greeted by the head coach of the Landquart Broncos and given a tour of the medieval district of Chur. Its narrow streets and numerous shops provided some nice sightseeing and shopping for the early afternoon. After being treated to a delicious team meal, the Cards headed to the athletic complex where the game would be played.

The Broncos, who are currently in first place in their Swiss league, featured an American head coach as well as a number of American players in skilled positions. After a hard fought effort, the Cardinals were able to handle the Broncos fairly soundly with a 29-7 victory on foreign soil.

With the conclusion of the game and yet another victory in Europe under their belts, the Cardinals settled down for a post game barbecue with the host Broncos and their fans, who were more than welcoming and accommodating. The team itself would like to thank the countless number of people who have helped support this trip and given the Cardinals an opportunity to play overseas. The events of yesterdays game will be something that the players, coaches, and family members in attendance will never forget. After arriving back at their hotel late last night, the team will travel to the Swiss capital of Bern today for what should be another day of amazing sights and experiences!

Switzerland Day Two: A Day on the Water

The second full day of their trip found the Cardinals exploring the lakes and rivers of Interlaken. After a morning practice, several of the players and coaches opted to go whitewater rafting with the guides from Outdoor Interlaken, a company that specializes in extreme sports. The town itself has been dubbed the "outdoor sports capital of Europe" and is known for its many adventurous activities that test the bravery of tourists. Aside from rafting, Interlaken offers sky diving, hang-gliding, para-sailing, canyoning (which many of us will be partaking in on Monday), and the perhaps the most unique of all zorbing. Zorbing places a person inside a giant rubber ball and has them bounce down a slope of a mountain. Once everyone returned to the hotel and cleaned up, the Cards were treated to a sunset cruise of Lake Brienz, one of the two lakes that Interlaken sits between.

Over the course of the three hour cruise, we enjoyed the scenery of the towns and chateaus that lined the picturesque shores of Lake Brienz. Aside from the scenery, the food on the cruise was outstanding. Dinner included fresh vegetables and barbecued steak and bratwurst. The lake itself had the clearest water that one could ever imagine and was a beautiful sight to behold once the sun started to set and the clouds cleared for a brief moment. Tomorrow is game day and all are excited to have the opportunity to play against European competition!

The game against the Lanquardt Broncos will be played at 6:30 PM in a small Swiss town called Chur, which is about two and a half hours outside of Interlaken.

Switzerland Day One: "The Top Of Europe"

After what seemed to be days of traveling, we finally arrived to our Swiss destination of Interlaken on Tuesday at about 7 PM, which is around 1 PM local time. The first night was spent settling ourselves in and becoming adjusted to the time change. Our first full day had us taking a short train ride to the base of the alps and then another train ride up to the town of Wengen, a small village that can only be reached by train.

Wengen, which sits at the base of the Swiss alps, was a small and quaint village and provided great opportunities for breathtaking photos of the alps. Splitting into two different groups, we then proceeded to hike a long trail up the Kleine Scheidegg mountain. While our tour guides Leo and Yurick warned us that the trail was somewhat difficult, I think a majority of our group was surprised at just how difficult a hike in the alps can be. The high altitude and thin air made it a struggle to climb more than a hundred yards or so without having to stop due to fatigue. In all, the hike took around two and a half hours, much of which was up a steep incline.

The hike ended with another small tourist friendly village with an absolutely stunning backdrop of the snow capped alps. Words cannot describe just how immense and majestic the Swiss alps are. I think the hike served as a great team bonding activity and gave our team an appreciation for mother nature. The Swiss have been extremely friendly and welcoming thus far and I am looking forward to what the rest of the trip has in store.

Feed My Starving Children

As part of a team organized service project last Thursday, a group of over sixty players and coaches of the North Central College Cardinal football team volunteered two hours of their time to pack meals for an Aurora based organization named Feed My Starving Children. Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding starving children in more than sixty countries worldwide. In about two hours, the Cards packed 139 large boxes of food which consisted of thousands of meals. These meals are enough to feed 83 starving children for an entire year. I would like to start by welcoming another talented recruiting class into the North Central College Football Family! As of today, May 8th 2009, 56 athletes have put down a deposit and are committed to playing for the Cardinals! In addition, there are 5 more recruits who have verbally committed. This is especially exciting as we have just added a 9th freshmen game. Beginning on September 13th, our newcomers will participate in game competition each and every week through November 8th! As the recruiting coordinator, I would like to publicly thank all the coaches, admission counselors, players and administrative staffs that have helped these fine young men enjoy their recruiting experience and make the decision to attend North Central College.

With next season’s team returning 17 key starters that are seniors or juniors, it was imperative to follow up last season’s recruiting class with another very talented group. As the recruiting season comes to a close, the coaching staff feels our last 2 classes have solidified our future at each and every position. This should allow the Cardinals to continue to be the winningest program in the CCIW! (25-3 over the last 4 seasons)

This years recruiting class features 7 players from out of state and brings our team total up to 18 (FL -5, MO-3, MI-3, IN-2, AZ-1, CA-1, KS-1, NJ-1, WI-1). Player Perspectives: Alex Haan

This edition of Player Perspectives features Freshman Quarterback Alex Haan. In his piece, Haan discusses the first week of Spring Practice, his experiences during recruiting and what he plans on accomplishing during the Spring and the upcoming season. Haan, a native of Homer Glen, Illinois, is a 2008 graduate of Chicago Christian HS.

After the first week of spring ball, I think things are going really well for me and the team. Coming together for 16 practices can only make the team better; it’s a great way to show all the hard work we have put into the off season. Getting out on the field is great because it keeps us up to speed with the knowledge of the game and gives us a chance to compete for a starting job. Spring practices are really good for recruiting and getting kids to come out for the football program because we can show the kids how we run practice and give them a feel for what our program is all about. We show that we work very hard each practice, but we also have fun while doing it.

The winter term went well academically. I decided to take four classes during my winter term to stay busy. Throughout the winter term I ate lunch with a recruit almost every day. During the recruiting overnights I hosted three recruits including a recruit from Connecticut. I had a great experience with Dom Sulo on my overnight recruiting visit so I feel like every other kid who decides to take an overnight visit here deserves the same.

Some of my personal goals are being the number two quarterback behind Aaron Fanthorpe throughout spring ball as well as the upcoming season. During the summer I want to improve my 225 max from 15 reps to 20 reps and my max squat 315 from 8 reps to 12 reps. Next season as a team I think we have all the tools and players to make it deep into the playoffs. I believe that if we stay healthy we can compete with any team in the nation.

I am going to Switzerland this summer with the team and I could not be more excited. Going out of the country with all my best friends and also playing football will be an unbelievable experience. Coach Spencer has done a great job setting up fun activities throughout each day. I think that Switzerland will be an unforgettable and I am really looking forward to the summer trip.

Player Perspectives: Derek Sulo

This edition of Player Perspectives features Junior Defensive Back Derek Sulo. Sulo, a three year starter in the Cardinal defensive backfield, earned CCIW First Team honors as a junior in 2008 as well as a spot on the D3Football.com’s North All-Region Third Team. In his career, Derek has accumulated 124 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5 interceptions, 25 pass breakups and 3 fumble recoveries. Sulo and his classmates have won three consecutive CCIW Championships and are poised to win a fourth in 2009. In addition, they have also made it to the second round of the Division III NCAA playoffs three years in a row. In his piece, Derek discusses being recruited by North Central, his early seasons, playing alongside his brother Dominic, and his goals for himself and the Cardinals in 2009. Derek is a 2006 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School.

I went on a few visits to opposing CCIW schools, and I had a great time. However, those other schools were missing something. That is when my brother introduced me North Central College. He told me that he had just met a crazy white haired guy named Coach Wienke. He told me that I had to come for a visit to see what the school and guys were like. I did what he told me, and came for an overnight visit with a bunch of other recruits. It was a great night, but more importantly the people were great. After that visit I told myself that I want to be a Cardinal, and the rest is history.

In my first season with the Cardinal football team I was fortunate enough to come in and contribute right away. I got to know everyone really fast, but mostly the juniors and seniors. Guys like Chris Bazant, Tim Bellazzini and of course the rest of my teammates didn’t treat me as a freshman, but as a friend. There was nothing more memorable than winning the CCIW championship with a group of guys who worked so hard. I believe that those guys set the standard for the next season and eventually our undefeated CCIW championship this last year. Off the field there are so many opportunities that the school offers. One of my most memorable experiences off the field happened just recently. I was nominated to go to a Regional Division III Leadership Conference. I got a chance to meet a lot of new people, and I learned a lot about myself as well.

The team has always been very connected with each other. I believe that everyone is treated like a person and an individual, not just a freshman or a number. You can always pick out the football guys in a crowd because we are loud and proud of whom we are.

I have been watching my brother Dominic succeed in athletics since grade school. It really is fun to watch him play because I know how much time and effort he puts into football. I am to a point in my athletic career, where I don’t even need to look up to see him; I just listen to the crowd cheering. I know every time that he gets the ball on offense he has a chance to score, and I think that is why he has been so successful. He is easily one of the hardest workers on the team. The benefits of going to school with my brother are endless. First off, I know that I will always have some sort of competition wherever I go. There are too many benefits to talk about, but I know that there will always be someone who knows were I have been and where I want to go.

I would like to help lead the Cardinals past the second round of the playoffs. A fourth consecutive CCIW championship is a very realistic goal as well. As far as personal goals, I would like to contribute in any way possible. I want to achieve first team CCIW honors as well as all-region. No matter what happens, I want everyone to know about our new tradition at North Central.

Each year we have improved, but we haven’t been able to get over the hump of the second round. I myself am putting everything I can into my final season as a Cardinal. I believe that we as team need to work hard to reach our ultimate goal. Once we can get everyone to buy in to the program you will see North Central in Salem, Virginia where we belong.

Football Recruiting At North Central College

Welcome to North Central College’s first football recruiting post. As the recruiting coordinator, I would like to explain a little bit about our process and program through a question and answer session. I will post some of the frequently asked questions and our program’s response.

1. When does North Central begin contacting recruits?

A: We will begin mailing and emailing as early as the spring of your junior year. Some coaches will begin calling to introduce themselves in the summer. Most coaches will begin calling recruits once we finish with our pre-season camp in September.

2. How do you collect my contact information?

A: I will send out questionnaires (mail and email) to all Illinois high school coaches asking for student athletes who are interested in continuing their football career in college. This goes out during the spring of your junior year. We also purchase recruiting information from a private vendor who contacts high school coaches individually.

3. When should I start to visit campus?

A: As early as your junior spring/summer you should begin to visit college campuses. Our coaches will have an opportunity to sit down and talk with you when you are on campus. We also invite recruits to campus on Saturday’s during our season to view a game and meet the staff.

4. How many athletes do you plan on recruiting each year?

A: Because of our “Make it Fun” philosophy, we have established an 8 game Freshman Program. In order to maintain a functional freshman and varsity team we will always strive to enroll 50-60 new student athletes. These numbers will include walk-on participants.When you consider a 2-deep roster is composed of 44 players, the addition of kickers & punters will quickly bring this number up to 50 new players.

5. Can freshmen participate on the varsity?

A: Absolutely. Each year we have 10-12 players from the freshmen class earn a letter for varsity participation. In fact each of the last 7 years freshmen have earned starting positions on the varsity roster.

I will continue to post questions/answers that frequently arise during the recruiting process. In addition, I will begin to post updates on our current recruiting class. As of this writing, we have secured 15 outstanding recruits for this year’s class along with another 15 verbal commitments. This weekend we will have 9 recruits on campus from Florida, 1 from Missouri, and 1 from Maryland. There is still lots of work to do, but this class is shaping up nicely.

Player Perspectives: Nick Swanson

This weeks edition of Player Perspectives features Senior Defensive Back and Team Captain Nick Swanson. Swanson was a three year starter in the Cardinals defensive backfield where his very productive career culiminated in 165 tackles, 6 interceptions, 15 pass breakups and 4 sacks. During his time at North Central, Nick was apart of four playoff qualifying teams and three CCIW conference champion teams, all of which he played an instrumental part in. Swanson and his teammates posted the best record over a four year span in North Central football history (38-9) and recently capped off the first undefeated regular season and 11 win season in school history. In his piece, Swanson reflects back on his four year playing career at North Central College, where the program has gone in his time with the school and what he feels it means to be a Cardinal football player. Swanson, who will graduate in the Spring with a degree in chemisty, is a 2005 graduate of Sandburg High School.

What does North Central College Football mean to me? After four years of playing football here, that is the question I started asking myself more and more frequently as my final season drew to a close. I guess the best way to go about answering this is to start from the beginning. When I first came to camp my freshman year I remember very well being intimidated by the older guys. It had nothing to do with the way the older guys treated me, I have no complaints about the seniors they were amazing to me. It was something else that intimidated me about those guys. Players like Tennerelli, Lenny and Bellz were different. The thing that set them apart from just another big guy playing football was the confidence they carried everywhere. That was what I wanted, that swagger, the confidence that comes with playing North Central Football. As an underclassman I didn’t know how to get that “chip on my shoulder” as Coach Wienke calls it, but over time and through training, I finally earned that swagger I saw in those guys 4 years ago.

When I was asked to write this I was asked to pick out the funniest thing that I remember from my football career, honestly, I couldn’t pick out just one story. I’ve had a lot of great times on the field as well as off. My favorite times of the day during the football season (except the games) have to be the times when everyone is sitting around just hanging out. For example, before practice when everyone is listening to music in the locker room, usually the worst dancers on the team try to impress everyone despite their lack of ability. Another perfect example would be after practice when everyone is tired and beat up and the feeling of just being around guys that you know that are working for the same goals as you are.

What is the largest change in NCC football in my four years? Coach Thorne got a TV show, evidence that North Central’s football program is rapidly becoming elite in Division III football. When people would ask what school I go to, and I would reply NCC, people would usually just nod and pretend like they knew where I was talking about. Recently, it seems like more of the people I meet have heard of the school. How do I feel about my success as a North Central College Football? Since being at NCC we have won 38 games, in my senior year we went 11-1 going undefeated in the regular season for the first time in the schools history. Needless to say, my four years have been surreal. These numbers have come from one place, the work ethic of the players. Enduring a season of Coach Wienke’s lifting packet reminds you that you need a special sort of drive or you will not make it here. I could not be happier about where I have been with this team or the records that we have completely shattered along the way.

What will I miss most? I will miss being close to all of these guys, after football is over everything changes. Everyone gets jobs, they have separate lives, they live in different places, and you really need to make an effort to see the people you want to see or before you know it you won’t even know those people anymore. Even in a school this size it is difficult to see everyone that you saw everyday for 4+ hours during football. I will miss preparing for a game; I loved studying the other team, looking for different tendencies that will give you the mental edge. Any meathead can lift weights and run and hit someone, but the truly good players study the game. I really loved the mental part of the game; I felt like that really made football special.

Player Perspectives: Kane Thompson

This edition of Player Perspectives features sophomore linebacker Kane Thompson. In his piece, Kane discusses the transition between freshman and sophomore year at North Central as well as the importance of academics and his experiences playing for back to back conference champion teams. This past season Kane recorded 17 tackles and 2 pass breakups, as well as a blocked kick. Kane is a 2007 graduate of Aledo High School in Aledo, Illinois.

Football at North Central College has been as fun as it has been challenging. Starting off as a freshman last year proved to be a major transition period in my life; I had to maintain my schedule, football, class work, etc. My freshman year did, however, serve as one of the more enjoyable times of my life. My conversion from freshman to sophomore has since been even more pleasant. I’ve participated in North Central’s first undefeated season, enjoyed another conference championship, had another postseason run, and experienced a senior class unlike any other. I believe the team chemistry at North Central College has built our program into a winning one.

A major difference between freshman and sophomore year is the understanding of personal expectations. Coming into the 2007 season at North Central, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. As a sophomore, I am able to fully understand the expectations of coaches on and off the field. I know where I stand in order to play, and I know what I need to do in order to find myself on the field.

Academics are essential at North Central College. I am currently majoring in Athletic Training and Pre-Physical Therapy. I’ve experienced a major transition from the classes I was taking last year to the classes I’m in this year. The classes I took were mainly general education requirements. Conversely, this year I’ve had a stronger focus of classes in my major. These classes are far more challenging, but they are also more enjoyable. I’ve learned that there are more things at North Central College other than to play football and meet new people. Academics should come first because we’ll all be out in the real world someday. Football at North Central College has helped me to focus on serious goals within my life.

Player Perspectives: Nate Vandermyde

This edition of Player Perspectives features freshman quarterback Nate Vandermyde and his experiences during his first season with the Cardinals. Vandermyde is a 2008 graduate of Morrison High School in Illinois.

In college, the competition for playing time was tougher than what it was in high school and that was a major adjustment. There were plenty of freshman games so, there were chances to play; it’s just that you have prove yourself in a game situation. The same went for varsity; you have to show the coaches that you are ready to play at that level. The majority of my time was spent preparing the varsity for game day, but there was time at the end set aside for us younger guys to prove ourselves. The coaches had a chance during that time to see our skills. They can also see how well we are doing through film, because the practices are filmed and the freshmen games are filmed as well. There is a higher level of commitment than what was required in high school.

For me the transition between high school and college was tough. College is a lot faster and everyone is on the same level. There is a lot more to learn in college than in high school when dealing with an offense. A lot of variations in formations, numerous passing plays, and certain footwork that goes along with the plays were frustrating to learn at first. The transition academically was somewhat tough but was not that bad. There are just papers that have to be written that cause a high amount of stress.

Class and athletics for me was not that hard to juggle. It got stressful at times but overall I found I could handle it; you just have to manage your time well. We have mandatory study table hours that we have to log so that’s a good time to get the majority of your homework done. During those study tables there are tutors readily available for just about any subject. You can always schedule a time to meet with your teachers to go over the subject material as well.

Our lifting program, I think, is really beneficial. It is time consuming but you have to lift in order to keep up with the other competition for your spot. The lifting helps ease the transition into college football because everyone on the football team is huge when you first come in; at least that’s how it felt for me.

Through lifting and memorizing the plays my goal is to get more playing time some way or another, whether that is at quarterback (where I am right now), special teams, or wherever it works out for me.

Cardinals Nationally Ranked

The 2008 North Central Cardinal football team ended their season ranked nationally in two different polls. The Cards finished 9th in the D3Football.com poll and 6th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. Congratulations to the team and their outstanding efforts this past fall!

Academic Champions

The Cardinals not only were perfect on the field but also in the classroom. Congrats to Mike MacIntosh, Joe Rubin, and Brandon Lott for achieving perfect 4.0 GPA's this fall term. We also had 54 players earn higher than a 3.0 GPA this fall which accounts for over 42% of the team. In addition, the receivers took home the title of "Term Academic Champions" with an average GPA of 2.89. Keep up the good work this term fellas!

Switzerland 2009

The Cardinals will head back to Europe this summer to take on the Landquart Broncos in Switzerland. We will be traveling June 15 thru June 23 throughout Switzerland visiting Bern, Lucerne, and Interlaken. Daily excursions will include lake rides, mountain climbing, canyoning, & white water rafting (see link below). The Cardinals last traveled in 2006 around Italy enjoying the sights and culture of Rome, Florence, and Venice. There are currently 46 football players signed up for the trip and a number of other family members, alums, and administrators from the institution. The next installment is due March 13th.

2008 Season Awards and Reflection

The 2008 campaign for the Cardinal football team continued to break records and build on the success of the years prior. For the first time in the school's long football history, the Cards had a perfect undefeated 10-0 regular season and set a record with 11 wins in a complete season.

With the many accomplishments and victories that 2008 brought North Central Football, the Cards plan on building on and continuing their success in 2009.

Aside from the team's success, 2008 also produced a number of different individual honors for Cardinal footballers;

Junior QB and team captain Aaron Fanthorpe cemented himself as a first team CCIW selection with huge games against Wheaton and Augustana. Fanthorpe was also voted as the Offensive MVP for the entire conference for the second year in a row. Aaron earned CCIW player of the week twice and was voted to d3football.com's North All-Region third team.

Junior LB and team captain Matt Wenger was perhaps the most decorated Cardinal in school history as his efforts this season earned him CCIW first teams honors as well as the Defensive MVP for the conference. Matt was tabbed as CCIW player of the week a league leading four times and was voted on to d3football.com's North All-Region first team. Wenger was named an AFCA All-American in December, an honor that very few DIII players achieve.

Junior RB and team captain Dominic Sulo continued to rush his way through the North Central record books this season as he was named a CCIW first teamer for the third time in his storied career. Sulo was also named CCIW player of the week on October 20th for his 127 yard performance against Carthage College. Dominic was named to d3football.com's North All-Region second team and stands to break every major career rushing record in school history during his senior campaign.

Senior Punter and team captain Adam Pucylowski kicked his way to the 5th best punting average in the nation in 2008. Adam was voted CCIW special teams player of the week three times and was voted first team all CCIW. Pucylowski was also able to earn a spot on d3football.com's North All-Region third team.

Junior DB Derek Sulo matched his brother's tenacity on the defensive side of the ball as he earned himself a CCIW first team spot for his efforts this past fall. Derek was also recognized by the editors of d3football.com as he notched a spot on their North All-Region third team.

Sophomore OL Kyle Antos was able to achieve CCIW second team honors in just his first year as a full time starter on the Cardinal offensive line. He was also recognized as a d3football.com North All-Region second teamer.

Junior OL Josh Delancy continued to gain accolades for his efforts on the field in 2008. Josh was tabbed as a CCIW second teamer as well as a d3football.com's North All-Region third teamer.
